Composition: The English Department utilizes the ACT/SAT cutoff scores below to place some students; however, any student placed with an ACT/SAT cutoff score may opt to take the Composition Placement Test to try to improve their placement. Students who score above the following cutoffs must take the Composition Placement test:

ACT/SAT Cutoff Scores YSU Course Placement

Students whose Composition Placement is for English 1539 or 1540 or whose Reading Placement is for R&SK 1510A or 1510B must enroll in the proper course(s) until the requirements are completed. The course(s) must be completed within the first 36 hours or the student will be limited to only those courses. If you are directed to enroll in English 1539 or 1540 and/or R&SK 1510A or 1510B, you must do so. You may not withdraw from the above-named courses unless you are making a complete withdrawal from the University.

Any of the above named mandatory courses may not be taken more than twice. Should you not successfully complete any of the courses or withdraw from them twice, you will be disenrolled from the University.

English Requirements - A student is required to complete the English requirement within the first 60 hours of course work. A student who does not complete the English requirement within the first 60 hours of course work will be prohibited from registering for any additional upper division courses until the English requirement has been met. Transfer students having completed 60 hours or more are exempt from this policy for their first 12 hours of enrollment at Youngstown State University.

The Office of Computer-Based Placement Service is located in the Registrar’s Office, Meshel Hall, Room 243. If you have questions, please contact Amy Reese at Ext. 1343 or ajreese@ysu.edu.
